The Cyclo-Cross World Championships will take place this weekend in Denmark, in Bogense, a coastal town north of Fyn Island.
This event has only taken place in Scandinavia once before, in 1998 in Middelfart, Denmark; Mario De Clercq won in the Under-23’s, Sven Nys in the Under-23’s, and Michael Baumgartner in Juniors. At that time, women's competitions were not part of the program.
This time, Mathieu Van der Poel is the grand favorite of the Elites. With 26 wins in 28 races, he hopes to beat Wout Van Aert, the three-time world champion.
In the Under-23’s, Thomas Pidcock and Eli Iserbyt are the two big favorites. If Iserbyt wins, he will be the first to win the Under-23’s three times.
In Juniors, Ryan Cortjens and Wietse Meeussen hope to win. The young Thibau Nys (Junior 1) will have as usual the support of a large audience. Wounded in Hoogerheide, he should start quickly. Opposite him, the Champion of Europe and Netherlands Pim Ronhaar is always present at major events. The form of World Champion Ben Tulett is a question mark.
Among the women, the Dutch hope to achieve a double-podium 100% orange as was the case at the European Championship. They can count on Marianne Vos, Lucinda Brand, Denise Betsema, or Annemarie Worst in Elites. Belgian World Champion Sanne Cant hopes to win a third title in a row.
For the Under-23’s, Ceylin Del Carmen Alvarado is the favorite.
